INNOVATIVE STEM EDUCATION

FOR EVERY CHILD IN GHANA

About the project

Welcome to BSTEM Ghana—a project dedicated to advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Ghana. The BSTEM project is delivered by Itec Global in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service and will integrate STEM into the basic education curriculum.

The project will equip students with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. To achieve this, the BSTEM project will provide all basic schools in Ghana with STEM equipment, educational resources and teacher training, all mapped to the Ghanaian curriculum.

“BSTEM focuses on hands-on, practical and experimental STEM education to foster each child’s curiosity, creativity and critical thinking.”

History

Itec Global has been involved in STEM education projects in Ghana since the early 1990s. Between 2008 and 2017, more than 400 Senior High Schools (SHS) were equipped with science and laboratory equipment, and 1600 SHS science teachers and technicians received an extensive 4-week training course. During this project serving the SHS level, it was recognised that STEM education at Basic Education level would benefit from similar support, which led to a pilot project of the BSTEM project in 2018/2019. The pilot project equipped 100 Junior High Schools (JHS) with STEM equipment and trained a cohort of 50 science and maths trainers who then trained more than 200 JHS teachers.

Project Phases 1, 2 and 3

The delivery of project Phase 1 has started in August 2024.

  • At Junior High School Level, the project will provide 4400 JHS with STEM equipment, Teacher Activity Books and train over 250 science and maths trainers as well as 4400 science and 4400 maths teachers on a five-day course.
  • At Primary School Level, the project will provide 4400 Primary Schools with STEM equipment, Teacher Activity Books and train 4400 Primary School teachers on a three-day course.

Once all three phases are complete, the project will have achieved the following objectives:

  • Schools provided with STEM equipment and Teacher Activity Books:
  • Teachers trained in science and maths education:
